The Simpsons: Bart vs. the Space Mutants (NES) Playthrough – NintendoComplete

A beginning to end playthrough of Acclaim’s 1991 NES game, The Simpsons: Bart vs. the Space Mutants from

This was one of the first licensed Simpson’s games, and until Virtual Springfield came out years later for Windows 95, the best one. The controls could be horribly annoying until you get used to them, but the game offers such a wide range of things to do that it’s difficult to get bored. The graphics are true to the show, the main theme is intact and well-rendered by NES standards, and the voice clips really give the game an added punch.

Great game, well worth the time, and nowhere near as hard as people like to make it out to be. Well, to be fair, I got this for my birthday a couple months after it came out and played it to death, and still regularly go back to it. That probably helps the difficulty level 🙂

  1. I had this for the Megadrive. Was AVGN lying? In the megadrive version the whistle had nothing to do with the dog. It shows up when you use the cherry bomb to care the bird. The whistle doesn't summon it, the whistle is for as shown getting Grandpa to throw some coin out the window. The only way you could mistake it for summoning the dog is if right after using the cherry bomb you blow the whistle.
Also he made a bit of a deal about the ball at 4:18, the player got it, but I remember in the Megadrive version if you miss it you can just bounce up and get the paint tin. Was NES version the same.
One problem he could have mentioned was the NPCs in purple clothes. Once they are gone they don't come back.

  2. Caramba eu nunca consegui zerar esse jogo, na verdade eu nem sabia o que tinha que fazer, me deixou totalmente traumatizado na minha infância. Kkkkkk

  3. I played this game and Finished it.

The level 1 of the game is so hard to finish, specialy when using black and white tv back then.

  4. The fact that you can stand on the doors goes against every rule of platformers. Truly a disaster of a game.

  5. I played this game for hours on end, after getting it with an Amiga computer when I was 8 years old. It was the first game that I owned, so at the time I didn't appreciate just how difficult it was compared to the average game.

Getting past the fourth level is a feat in itself, requiring a ton of pinpoint precision jumping, which in this game is near impossible. This was usually the level that claimed the last of my lives. I can still remember the excitement of getting past it, to the power plant. Heart thumping, hands sweaty every time.

I only managed to get to the last level a handful of times, but never finished it. The timer was a killer there, as well as the sheer amount of aliens. The frustration of being so close, after playing for an hour, clearing the awful fourth level, and then having to go all the way back to the first level. It was enraging.

Now I have rediscovered the game, after hacking a NES Classic Mini, so I am giving it another shot. This time with the help of the Classic's save feature.

  6. This game was freaking hard. Probably the only reason why I played was the fact that it was the Simpson series. If it has been any other unnamed character I would throw it away in no-time.

  7. Super difficult game when I was young! Difficult now too..
Game nowadays are easy compared with new games..

  8. 6 yrs after this was posted, I'm on here at 2:30 in the morning cuz I can't sleep. I used to play this all the time as a kid. I don't think I ever got past the 1st window!! So this is quite entertaining

  9. If only the controls were more easier to handle than maybe it could be great

But hey for a Simpsons game especially from the 90s it’s a good effort

But let’s be honest the arcade game hit and run and the Simpsons game are the definitive Simpsons video games

  10. Played this on a black and white TV when it came out. Didn't get very far.

  11. I got stuck on first level did not know I have to scare the bird with the rocket 😥 no YouTube back then to get help just me 🥴

  12. 6:10 Cool! This was back when they originally wanted Barney to own the Bowlarama, before it was later scrapped as a twist like with Marge having rabbit ears

  13. I’ve made a couple replies on other comments but I have to check in again. 25ish years ago I started my journey. I harmless rental. With sometimes as long as 5-7 year breaks in between, I dusted off the NES for Quarantine and warmed up by playing Link. (Which I’ve beaten many times though not until college (circa 2002)) I’ve probably died at Mr. Dinosaur over a thousand times.

I had never seen it conquered in real life, even though I knew how to do it. That changed 30mins ago. I’ve always been good enough where I would show up to Mr. Dinosaur with 15-20 lives and with some perspective from this video, I was finally able to do it!! (I say some because on my original cartridge, the jump is insanely more difficult AND, after you step on him the 3rd time, you CANNOT just walk right, you fall in pit. If you jump a little to far, you fall in pit. Learned both of those ways “the hard way”)

Beat Boss of level 4 easily and I did not use this video in any way to complete the last level. I went through everything myself to collect the 🧪, and I spent 2 lives of time searching for the last one, only to get lucky because I went to talk to Maggie to see if she was interested in giving me information. Anyway, decades of dedication have paid off and there is hope out there!! YOU CAN DO IT!!!!!

  14. I remember someone owning this when I was a kid. Never owned it myself though. Cool game and the Simpsons were/are a cultural icon.
